Translator's Notes:

I'm gonna be straight with you, I got distracted going WHUT?! WHAT IS THIS SONG CHANGMIN?!? and forgot what I was doing lol.

On the other hand, the whole thing made sense and was easy to translate, it just... translated into... THAT.

CHANGMIN OMG.

1.  "So I desire you more" - has no "you" in it as per usual, it just makes sense that she's what he desires.  (*cough* he makes that only too obvious later *cough*)

2. "A little hair-raising" - "아슬아슬하다" means "to be a close thing / risky / touch-and-go" etc, so I went with "hair-raising" as a version that could apply to a couple as well as a high-speed car chase or something.

3. "Attracted without reason" - the lyrics have here "이윤" (profit/gain), but I decided "이유 + 는" (reason) made more sense in the context?

4. "It only arouses me" - DED DED DED sorry but he really said that

5. "Sometimes I’m not sure if I can reach you / You’re tantalizing" - The Korean is a little hard to translate here, "닿을 듯 말 듯" means something like "as if I will touch you as if I stop/won't", i.e. he's not sure he can, which fits with her being "애태우게 하다" (tantalizing / held in suspense) in the next line.

Translator's Notes:

Another reasonably straightforward one to translate.  ^_^   It helps that the "She's puzzle pieces filling me up to make a complete picture" metaphor remains consistent, it really helps with translation!

1.  "Like I'm the first man you possessed / Now you hide inside of me" - This was the hardest line for me, it's really confusingly ordered.  Anyway, that's my best guess.  The verbs are "홀리다" (to be possessed, bewitched by etc) and "숨다" (to hide), but I guess it makes sense if she's puzzle pieces filling him, by extension she is getting inside him so-to-speak, like a (demonic) possession...

2. "Raise me up higher" - there's no "me" in this line (although this song is pretty good with pronouns in general!) so who knows what is actually being raised up higher.

3. "You fit everywhere in the empty space as if it were like cogwheels" - That sounds weird but it's pretty much literally what it says.  There were a lot of "like" and "as if" type words in that sentence - more than the English can really handle.  Basically, cogwheels fit together real nice with no gaps, and so do these pieces filling the space?

 Translator's Notes:

I like this song, it was pretty easy to translate.  ^__^

1. There were, however, a lot of the ol' missing pronouns.  So the whole first bit, for instance, with him getting ready, there's not a single sign it's him not her.  The references to who does what are basically restricted to "I'll arrive sometime later" and "Where are you?" and I tried to fit it in around that, so I translated "향수" as "cologne" and not "perfume" etc.

2. "In every lovely day / filling with thrills" - "설렘" means thrill/flutter/tingle/tremble etc and is a good one for describing how you feel when you're in love.

3. "See me, deeply, completely fallen in love" - it's hard to express how very badly he's fallen here lol, because there is a veritable pile-up of words in the Korean.  "사랑에 푹 빠져버린 날 봐" means literally "in love deep/well sunk-completely me see".

4. "My head becomes confused" contains an idiomatic expression with the verb "아득하다" which literally means "to be distant" but in this context can mean you're feeling at a loss/dazed and confused etc.

This song has a bit of a different vibe to the first two tracks, as you can see from the lyrics.

Translator's Notes:

1. The Korean title, 다 지나간다, does not mean "broken" (that comes from the English in the lyrics I guess) but "It's all passing and going" or, in better English something like "It's all gone".

2.  "Just to the extent" is something that gets repeated kinda a lot and that's annoying because it's hard to express well in English.  It comes from "만큼", which means variously "as much as", "to the extent that" etc.

3. "Now perfectly the words of parting / Match" - this verb (어울리다) is often used for clothes, like if they match or to say if something suits a person.  It can also be used of people as in for people to "mix" or indeed be well suited as a couple etc.  So!  It could be that the words of parting "match" (each other, if they've both reached the point of wanting to say them) or they "suit" or whatever because now is the right time for them?

4. "Going to find that natural place" - I think the "natural place" here means going back to where they began / where they're comfortable (in other words, back to being apart and their separate lives).

Track two on New Chapter #1 is the title track, A Chance of Love 운명.

Note that the Korean title,운명, in fact means "fate / destiny".

Translator's Notes:

This one was WAY harder than Love Line in places.  >.>

1. "It's definitely that thing they call fate" - this is rather a lengthy translation of the line, but I'm trying to be literal.  Most translations have it as "that's fate" which is basically the same thing and fits the line better?  However, the Korean line, "바로 그 운명이란 거", means "directly that said-is-fate-thing".

2. "You yourself come and you fall" - how you translate this depends on the spacing of the Korean, because "넌 스스로와 빠져" and "넌 스스로 와 빠져" could basically mean different things.  With "와" attached to "스스로" it means more like, "with you yourself" (a construction you might use elsewhere, say, when saying you were talking just with yourself).  Attach "와" to "빠져" and it no longer means "with" at all, it's a verb, and you get instead, "come and fall".
Did I ever say Korean was complicated??  ^_^;;;
But basically either makes sense in context, I guess.  She's falling, they're falling together...

3. The next line, "I'll show you, eyes seeing a different visual the world" is just one of those fractured-Korean-in-song-lyrics things that I give up on trying to make real sense out of, and makes me wonder why I'm not translating something with proper sentences in it, lol.  Is it 2 fragments?  3?  Does it make sense either way?  Who even knows.

4. "As I lead, you follow for me" - I stuck that "for" in there although "As I lead, you follow" sounds better in English, simply because the Korean line, "이끄는 대로 넌 따라와 줘 날", means "as soon as leading, you follow-and-come-for-my-benefit me".  That's just one of those wonderful Korean constructions that can't be properly translated into English, but I wanted to get some of it's meaning across.

Yunho - DROP MV beginning rap part translation!

The lyrics I found for DROP (my translation here) did not include the rap at the start of the MV, and that's like the entire first minute!  So it would not do.

(And quite seriously you cannot watch DROP enough times, it's EPIC.  *__*)

So, I scoured the internet for a transcription of the rap, and here is my translation so you guys can enjoy it too.

I was in kind of a hurry to translate when I did it and now I've lost the Korean version so I can't check my translation before posting.  T_T

Anyway, I still think this is important if you want to understand the whole lyrics.  It's a song about political disillusionment and the desire for change.

This song was pretty ok to translate, actually.  And it's awesome to sing along to as well, not that I got distracted at all while I was translating... ^_^;

But 평행선 from the title actually means "parallel line(s)", so the whole "love line" thing is a metaphorical thing and it's not literally a song about, idk, palmistry and the "love line" in your hand or whatever.

I love this song.  I love all of Roy Kim's songs tbh, but it's been a while since we had a new one, and this is just so.... Roy Kim.  It's a lovely, soft, sad-yet-hopeful ballad that just makes my heart go all melty.  *_*

Here's the English translation of the lyrics:

Translator's Notes:

그때 헤어지면 돼 in the title translates as "Then if we break up, it's ok".

Actually this song was generally straightforward to translate... though the bits with "the way to love you" did not come with pronouns in the following line, so I had to take a stab in the dark whether it was "if I smile" or "if you smile" etc.

There was also one line that just confused me, which I think word-for-word means something like "you desire it or stop (desiring it), the fact that I will catch you".  Sooo I translated it as "When you no longer care if I catch you", probably wrongly lol but it was the only way I could think of to word it so it would fit in with the next lines which I do understand.
I've seen it elsewhere as something like "I'll catch you whether you want it or not" but that didn't seem to fit the pattern (which I take to be mirrored from "If you come to like someone else / If I become accustomed to being without you" - where both lines add up to the break up).  I was trying to find a way it was something spelling the end of the relationship too because in context that seemed to make sense.
Also in the MV it's the bit where Roy is running and he stops exhausted and gives this kind of little "ok, it's over" nod, and that seemed to fit too.

And did I mention that I love Roy Kim?  ^_~

Changmin - 여정 (In a Different Life) translated lyrics!

First off! The Korean title 여정 means "Journey" which makes sense when you read the lyrics (as does "In a Different Life" as the English title. How often do they BOTH make sense?!).

In a different life / 너와 나의 세상이/ In a different life / 만나는 그날 : the word 너와 means either "you and" or "with you", so the meaning could equally be "My world with you" or "Your world and mine"... given in the other part the two Korean sentences joined (Hearing carried on the wind / your voice) I went with option two so 만나는 그날 (literally something like "that day of meeting") had something to tie to.

But yeah, actually this wasn't too hard (DROP poses far more translation problems, hence why I had no time for the notes!) and I'm glad Changmin loves us too.  <3

What I haven't done is rewatch the video with the lyrics and see if all of them are included.  Like, a lot of the song is rap, and that often gets missed out?  There was one bit at least (count down to the dance part near the end) I didn't think was here, but yeah.  It was just a countdown.

(UPDATE!  I have since found the rap part from the start of the MV and made a translation of that which I have posted separately, because that bit?  It's much more than just a countdown.  ^_~)

It's another one with the confusion of you/me/us, given the context I translated mostly as "we" although it could just refer to him.  Otherwise it was fairly straightforward.  Roy Kim is much easier to translate than some others!!!  ^__^

1. "Since I cannot let you go" is technically "put you down" like she's a heavy suitcase or something?  I couldn't think of another way to put that in English WITHOUT making her sound like a suitcase?  Idk if the putting-down-a-burden thing was what Roy was going for though, so...  ^_~ 


2.  "Where we can greatly breathe our love" really makes BASICALLY NO SENSE but hey, that's what it says, or "breathe it in/out deeply" or something else which ALSO MAKES NO SENSE but whatevs.


3.  "Even if time flows and passes": the two verbs are actually the same, so it is really "even if time flows and flows".  Time flows A LOT in Korean, not so much in English?  So I went with "flows and passes" - one translated literally, the other for meaning.


4.  A note about 그래:  This and it's ilk are literally THE BANE OF MY LIFE when translating (hmm, ok, maybe there's worse, but it's close) and it's ALL OVER THIS SONG.  T_T  There is NO good English translation really, it and the like of 그렇게 come from 그렇다 and basically mean "it is like that".  So they can be translated as "yes" or "right" or a hundred other things that really have ZERO FUNCTION in an English sentence and just get in the way. 
Roy sings 그래 about a million times in this song, and I have not directly translated it for most of them.

I realised that the official YouTube has subtitles on the MVs so I checked my translation against them when it was done so I feel like it doesn't need much explanation.  The places where it's really different are when I am being more literal (you know me and the exact words :p), that's all.
That's the wonderful (frustrating?) thing about translations, how different they can be while still saying the same thing.  ^__^

Yeah, ok, Heaven is track 6 so no way should I be there yet, but a) I love it <3 and b) I could tell it was going to be sooooooo easy to translate I couldn;t resist.

 The version on Blooming Season EP is a solo, original version is from the Goblin OST (Part 12), where he sang it with Kim E-Z from Flower Jam Project (or whatever else they translate that as, sorry idk the official English name).

Translator's Notes:

The "You, uniquely beneath heaven / My smile, unique beneath heaven" bit just seems very awkward in English... I can make it make more sense, but I have to go adding in verbs that aren't there?  Literally that IS what the song lyrics say, nothing else.  I think the meaning would be more clearly rendered as "You are the only one beneath heaven that makes me smile" or similar, but... that's not ACTUALLY what it says, in exact words.  I like exact words lol.

Also, if you really want to know, that smile isn't "breaking out" but more... gushing.  Like idk, a waterfall?  It's a water-shooting-out verb to my brain.  I just decided "breaking out" is more what an English smile would do?

I feel like I have waited FOREVER for this one.  So glad it's finally here!

Sooo in typical Kpop style it comes with Korean (and Hanja) title with a hotly debated translation... iTunes are going with Blossom, everyone else is going with Blooming Season or words to that effect.

I am going with that one, just, you know, because.  ^__^

(Actually it's because Roy Kim's official facebook announced the album title by saying, "Singer-songwriter Roy Kim will be releasing a mini album 개화기(開花期) on the 16th.  "개화기" has the meaning of the period when flowers bloom." (my translation from the Korean announcement)

THEN I looked it up in my Hanja dictionary (yup, I totes have one of those!) and the Hanja mean "opening flower period" so HA iTunes, we're right, you're wrong, there is a "season" in there too.

So~~  Apart from sticking it to iTunes, to me "Blooming Season" really does just make more sense, and although "Flowering Season" might be better English, no one else is using that one.  ^_~ 

Also, in case you wanted to know, 개화기 also has the meaning of "period of enlightenment" in Korean, as in, like the Renaissance or whatever.  Mainly Joseon dynasty turning modern, but yeah.  Maybe Roy had this in mind too?)

 

Anyway.  Got straight down to work, and here are the translated lyrics to the first track off the album.  Although it is the... second title track?

As with pretty much EVERY KOREAN SONG LYRIC EVER there is great lack of clarity about I/you/we/the old lady from across the street, whatever.  While we can safely rule out the old lady across the street I think, lines like "you will dream of a forever love" could be "we will dream" or even "I will dream".

Also I invented the word "overflowingly" because that's what the lyrics said, and yeah, I could have said "giving too much" which sounds like a thing an English speaker might say about a relationship, but... it's not quite overflowingly is it?  ^_~)
